Three ways to work out 12 ÷ 3

12 ÷ 3 = ?

1 Share into three groups

Share 12 counters equally between 3 people. Give each person one at a time until all the counters are shared.

Each person gets 4.

2 Make groups of three

Put 3 counters in each group. Keep making groups until all 12 counters are used.

There are 4 groups.

3 Use multiplication

3 × 4 = 12
12 ÷ 3 = 4

Ask, “Three times what makes twelve?” The multiplication fact gives the division answer.

Equal sharing means every person gets the same number. Count each group to check.
