Division facts are easier to work out when you connect them to equal groups and multiplication. Start with 24 ÷ 4.

Three ways to work out 24 ÷ 4

How many groups of 4 fit into 24?

1 Count groups of four

Make groups of 4 from 24 counters. Count the groups, or count in fours until you reach 24.

6 groups, so 24 ÷ 4 = 6

2 Use a multiplication fact

4 × □ = 24
4 × 6 = 24

Ask, “Four times what makes twenty-four?” Use 4 × 6 = 24 to find the missing number.

24 ÷ 4 = 6

3 Split into friendly parts

20 ÷ 4 = 5
4 ÷ 4 = 1

Split 24 into 20 and 4. There are 5 groups of four in 20 and 1 more group in 4.

5 + 1 = 6 groups

Ask, “Why does splitting 24 into 20 and 4 help?” Both parts can be divided into whole groups of four.

A point to check

When splitting 24, divide both parts by 4 before adding the results. 20 ÷ 4 + 4 is not the same calculation.

Need an easier starting point?

Start with 8 ÷ 4 and 12 ÷ 4. Make the groups before writing the division fact.
